This Weekend's Homework: 1/13 - 1/16

Hi guys!

Let me just start by saying that I am so proud of you! For the most part, you guys ROCKED the quiz you took on Thursday!!! I know it wasn't an easy test, so that leads me to believe that the extremely high grades means that you were very prepared for it. You made my day! Keep up the good work!!!

I'm also really happy to see the increased effort that the majority of you are putting into your homework that requires you to answer questions. Yesterday you got four comprehension question assignments back. In the past, I had many low grades due to writing in complete and/or not detailed enough answers. However, this time around, that wasn't the case! Answers were complete and thorough. Way to go, Language All-Stars!!!

This weekend's homework assignment is:
1.) Complete the characterization packet. You MUST use your book to complete this activity because you have to go in and find quotes. The quotes that you pick MUST show an example of S.E. Hinton's characterization.

2.) Complete your calendar for the portfolio project that we're working on all week long during class. It may not be a bad idea for you to have your groups solidified and the choices made for class on Tuesday. Some of you may opt to start some of the assignments, too, and that's fine. :) REMEMBER, a parent/guardian MUST sign the calendar so that I know they know what's going on in ELA class.

LOOKING AHEAD:
You are having your Outsiders final exam on Friday, 1/20/12. Don't worry about studying just yet, but keep it in the back of your mind when planning out when you're going to complete what.

Remember, the BEST way to study for one of these quizzes is to learn synonyms and antonyms for your vocabulary words. Make connections to words you already know. This will help you TREMENDOUSLY on the quiz!!!

1.) If you didn't complete the assignment for extra credit over the weekend, you need to write me a list of 10 slang words from the 1960s. Make sure that they're appropriate for school words/phrases AND that you have the definitions to go along with them.

2.) Write a perfect paragraph (you may use personal pronouns) about the statement "You are who your classmates say you are." What label do you think your classmates have placed on you, why, and how does that make you feel (and why). Make sure you follow the recipe - thesis, details, defense and conclusion - or this assignment will NOT be accepted. If it's not done, you will not gain admittance to the class tomorrow until it's completed.

3.) Continue to work on whatever your group assigned you for homework on Friday. Remember, we're meeting up again on Wednesday, so make sure your part of the assignment is completed.

Why, hello there, my Language All-Stars!!!

I hope that you had a great and very productive day! Although I thoroughly enjoyed my training today, I did hate missing the last day of group project work. I hope that you guys planned appropriately and assigned homework to each other so that you're prepared to ROCK IT next Wednesday when you can get back together and make the master game plan for the end result. Your videos are due on Friday, 12/16, so you need to make sure that you are working a little bit each day on the project.

So, your homework on Monday night is going to be to look up 10-15 APPROPRIATE FOR SCHOOL 60's slang words. You are also going to need to have what they mean along with the word itself. However, if you get this done over the weekend and bring it in to me on Monday, you will get some bonus points to kick off Trimester 2. Sounds like a pretty SWEET deal to me, don'tcha think?!?

Oh!!! One more thing! If something went wrong during the group work today that you want to let me know about, or something went really well that you want to let me know about, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE shoot me an email. This way I can address it and/or fix it first thing on Monday. Thanks guys!!!

In your down time, I hope that you studied for the second part of your final exam - the section on short story elements, symbolism, irony, apostrophes, perfect paragraphs and analogies. Other than questions 4 and 5, you MUST use two different stories to support your thesis.

Anyway, I just wanted to give you a heads up about your final. Because of the week off due to the power outage, we obviously had to push our final back. You will be starting the open response section of your final on Thursday in class. The in-class portion of the final will be taken a week from Monday. If you are going to be out that day, please make arrangements with me ASAP to make it up as grades close on Wednesday and report cards go home on 12/2.

I will be staying after on Tuesday and Thursday only this week, so if you want/need assistance studying, please make arrangements to stay on one or both of those days.

Tonight's homework has changed from what was originally assigned (I hope my 2nd and 3rd periods are reading this!!!) because of a compromise that I made with my fourth period class - so you should all thank them!

Originally you were told to do vocab cards for the remaining Poe vocab (The Tell-Tale Heart and The Masque of the Red Death), however, you only have to do vocab cards for "The Tell-Tale Heart."

Periods 4 and 5 you also have to complete your plot charts using words, symbols and appropriate colors.

Tonight's Homework:

1.) Answer questions for "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe on page 209 in your textbook. Please answer the Reading Check question in the box in the upper right hand corner and all of the questions in the Shaping Interpretations section. That's it.

2.) Skim through your copy of "The Masque of the Red Death." Annotate it for VOCABULARY ONLY! Circle all the words you don't know and ask me about them tomorrow. You are also to underline your vocabulary words for that story, draw and arrow to the margin and then write it's definition there. If you didn't grab a copy of the story off the front table, google the story's title and it will come up :)

Just a heads up, guys, that we're going to be concluding our short story unit in the next two weeks with our mini author study on Edgar Allan Poe. When we finish we will be having a final exam on EVERYTHING we've experienced since the beginning of school.

As of right now the final is set to be in two parts and is scheduled for (and these dates are subject to change):

November 10th - In class open response portion (choose two questions to answer)
November 14th - Exam (one period)

If I were you, I'd start going through my binder and studying. I know it seems like a while down the road, however, it's a TON of information and it's still going to be coming at you. To date, the information you need to know is:

~ Your Elements of Short Story notes (including the plot chart)
~ Your Irony notes
~ Your Perfect Paragraph notes

~ Apostrophes
~ Answering Questions
~ Your open response rubric

I hope that you've all had a wonderful weekend. I've been busy reading and grading your open responses and made a very vivid discovery. Ready for it? Here it goes:

YOU NEED TO USE YOUR NOTES WHEN DOING ASSIGNMENTS!

Based on what I've read so far, I can only come to the conclusion that the majority of us are not doing that as of right now. I came to this idea because the definition most of you are using is not the one I gave you, therefore, your paragraphs are either slightly off topic or just incorrect. Remember, your notes are there for you to use and abuse. The expectation is that you do that on a regular basis (hence the reason we don't want you to use homework folders because you need your binders to complete an assignment to the best of your ability).

I will have some papers set to go home with you starting tomorrow. You all will have your paragraphs back by the end of the week. Remember, my writing policy is that you may write any assignment over again as many times as you want until you are happy with your grades.

1.) Read all of The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant. Be prepared to discuss tomorrow (and I'd be prepared for a reading check if I were you...hint, hint, wink, wink)

2.) Pull out any examples of irony that you find. Make sure you explain WHAT KIND of irony they are and WHY (if you have your chart from class, you may do it on that. If you didn't get a chart, then you can do this on a separate piece of paper).

3.) Please review your Answering Questions Guidelines sheet that was handed out yesterday in class. It should be in the Resource section of your binder.

You were handed out an Answering Questions Guidelines sheet today in class that should be tucked safely away in your reference section of your binder. If you don't know where yours is, here's another one.

Today's Class and Tonight's Homework- 9/30/11

Sooo....we're all organized now! I know that taking pretty much the entire class today to organize your ELA stuff was a little crazy, but I really think that it was necessary. Remember that from this point on, things are to be put in the correct sections and EVERYTHING is to have your name on it (or at least your first initial and your last name) and EVERYTHING needs to be dated. I know that you can keep this organized, it just needs to be a priority for a little while. Here's a fun fact, if you do anything for 30 days it becomes a habit, so if we stay on top of being organized for 30 days, after that it'll be a piece of cake!!!

Maybe it would be a good idea to organize yourself in the rest of your classes now that you kind of know what's expected. Remember if you want help organizing yourself please ask!!! I'm here every morning early and I stay late pretty much every day. :)

I hope you had a chance to check out your grades today. If you need your Student ID number, see me on Monday and I'll give it to you (I'm sorry if you came to see me today, but it was really hectic and I didn't have five minutes to check your number for you!). If I were you and I wasn't happy with what I saw, there's plenty of time to rectify the problem. If you are happy with what you saw, you know what you need to keep doing to keep your grade the way it is.

TONIGHT'S HOMEWORK: You started your Irony Visual Projects yesterday in class and the finished copy on the paper you were given is due Monday. It is a QUIZ grade, so please make sure you pay extra close attention to the rubric and follow it (what section of your binder will you find that in? haha)

Hi guys! Some of my classes had AMAZING discussions and participation today during the apostrophe lesson!!! Way to go! Remember, my tip for you on your worksheet tonight is to keep asking yourself "Who Owns What?" to help to figure out where the apostrophe should go.

Your homework tonight is:
1.) Finish JUST PART A of your warm-up packet. If anymore of the packet comes in done tomorrow I will take it and not give it back. Tomorrow we do PART B as the warm-up and will correct PART A.

2.) 3-20 on the Apostrophe Homework worksheet. We did 1 and 2 together in class.

3.) Study your apostrophe rules and come in with any questions you may have.

Tonight you need to write a practice Perfect Paragraph that answers the question "What came out of the door, the lady or the tiger?" Remember, we are going to use these paragraphs in our warm-up on Monday, so please make sure you have them completed and in class then. While typing them is definitely not necessary for this particular assignment, if you think you may need to type it to make sure that other people can read it, please do so. I can't wait to see what you came up with!

Remember to use your Perfect Paragraph notes from today and your "Lady or the Tiger?" text to help you write the best paragraph that you can.

Hi guys! Great discussions today in class!!! I can't wait to see what you come up with for tomorrow!!

Homework tonight is to create a two column chart. Label the top of one side "What Good Writing Looks Like" and the other side "What Writing that Needs Improvement Looks Like." Then bullet characteristics of each one in the appropriate column. Use your observations from today's activity to help you out!

You also have to write a paragraph about why we write. Why is writing important? What's its purpose? Why is it important that we learn to write correctly and appropriately?

Vocab quizzes were given back today, so test corrections are due by next Thursday. Use the link on the blog to help you out. If you got a sign and return please show me your quiz signed tomorrow and then you can have it back to do test corrections if you wish.

Yay, I finally got my computer issues all dealt with! Now I can start posting things on the blog and I thought I'd start with this weekend's homework.

1.) I didn't get a chance to check your binders today, so I will do that on Tuesday. Make sure yours is organized the way that it should be (see below).

2.) If you didn't turn in your goal star today, please make sure that it makes its way to me on Tuesday.

3.) Your personality projects need to be completed by Tuesday. I can't wait to see what you've come up with!!! :)

PARENTS: Please make sure that your Language All-Star has shown you my letter to you. If you can just be aware that there is a date mistake it, that would be great. It is written that I would like the letters by Wednesday, September 9th, however it's the 7th. Thanks!!!
